Sahariennes
Songs of women of the Sahara
The music of the Sahara belongs to a large family – including religious and secular customs, as well as Berber, Tuareg and Gnawa heritage – where women carry traditions in their voices. Here, the four protagonists of Sahariennes display their artistic solidarity, far from the clichés and conflicts between their respective countries. Noura Mint Seymali is the leading Mauritanian female singer of her generation. The singer Dighya Mohammed Salem carries her past as a Sahrawi refugee. Souad Asla and Malika Zarra strive to promote the musical heritage of Algerian and Moroccan women. Together, they write the stories of tomorrow.
