Founded by cello virtuoso Abel Selaocoe, Chesaba is an electrifying trio that celebrates Africa and its history, from the music of the griots to that of South Africa’s townships. Set against this eclectic mixture of cello, kora, n’goni, African percussion instruments, bass and vocals, the songs are in Bambara, Zulu, Sotho, Tswana and other languages. The trio’s music leaves room for improvisations that are influenced as much by jazz as classical music, where frantic rhythms are combined with powerful traditional melodies.
